Scriptures to Review: Matthew 3:1-5

  • Prior to hearing the sermon this week, how would you have defined “righteousness”? What do you think about the definition given in the sermon: “Being made right in order to live right”? Is there anything you might change or add?
  • What does it practically look like for us to be like John the Baptist and “make straight paths” (Matt 3:3) for the Lord? How is that connected to righteousness?
  • How can Christ-followers be “bold un upholding truth” without coming across as unloving, judgmental, jerks? Or should we just not be concerned about how we are perceived?
  • RC Sproul says “Jesus not only had to die for our sins, but he had to live for our righteousness.” What do you think that means? Do you agree/disagree? How does Jesus’ life make us righteous? Does it have anything to do with Romans 4:1-5?
  • If it is Jesus’ LIFE that makes us righteous, what do we do with 2 Corinthians 5:21?
  • Why do you think Jesus wanted to be baptized? What does Jesus’ baptism have to do with Him fulfilling all righteousness? (Matt 3:15)
